Why Is Consumer Unit Replacement Necessary?

An outdated consumer unit, often referred to as a fuse box, is a ticking time bomb in your home. It’s a crucial component that distributes electricity throughout your property, and when it’s not up to standard, it poses significant risks to you, your family, and your property.

Benefits of Upgrading to a Modern Consumer Unit

  • Safety First: Older consumer units often lack essential safety features like Residual Current Devices (RCDs), which can detect electrical faults and instantly cut off the power, preventing electric shocks and potential fires. A modern consumer unit is equipped with these vital safeguards, significantly reducing the risk of electrical accidents.

  • Power Performance: With the increasing number of electrical devices in our homes, older consumer units can struggle to cope, leading to power cuts, flickering lights, and even the potential for electrical fires caused by overloading. A new consumer unit can handle the demands of modern living, providing a stable and reliable power supply.

  • Compliance and Value: Electrical regulations are constantly evolving to ensure safety. Outdated consumer units may not meet current standards, which could impact your home’s insurance and resale value. Upgrading to a compliant consumer unit protects you from potential legal and financial issues.

Residual Current Device (RCD) is a must have safety device which switches electricity off in a fraction of a second incase of an electrical issue. Old fuse boxes don’t have RCDs and can take significantly longer to switch off electricity i.e. the difference between life and death.

Fixing a tripped switch or fuse ( In the case of the old style fuse box) normally is not an intense activity. Check out our blog on “How to fix a tripped switch or fuse” , that can help you solve tripped switches or fuses.

It’s unlikely you will need any other work doing just because your electrics are old. The most common additional work that may be required is earth bonding. It is mandatory under UK wiring rules that earth bonding is present before any electrical work can be undertaken.

There are tons of advantages that come with the new fuse boards over the old style fuse boxes. You get circuit breakers instead of fuses, RCD Protection, multiple circuits for improved safety, fire-resistant enclosure, clear labelling and identification, remote monitoring and smart features etc.

Our prices vary on the size of the consumer unit and if you need more than one. The pricing factors include:

  • All materials including a top brand METAL fuse box (now in regulation) with breakers, such as MK

  • Labour carried out by one of our qualified NICEIC domestic or contractor installers;

  • Installation Certificate on completion, which will be registered with your local council or building regulations;

  • 12 months’ warranty on all parts and workmanship.
